Gilbertsville Business District

Gilbert Building, Commercial Street

This unusual commercial block expresses the interest in period revivals which became prevalent in the late 1800's.The block was constructed between 1893 and 1895 to replace buildings that had been destroyed by fire. The applied wooden strips are reminiscent of half-timbered structures in Tudor England. The free use of various decorative motifs is characteristic of vernacular buildings of the late nineteenth century. The building now houses the Value Way Country Store, the Gilbert Block Quilt Shop and serves as artist studios for several of Gilbertsville's artists and the Gilbert Block Ice Cream Shop.

The Gilbert block compliments the impressive Major's Inn across the street.
